Codex usage limits reset on two clocks: a 5-hour window and a weekly window that starts with your first request after the last reset. On top of that, OpenAI regularly resets everyone's limits early, either immediately or as a “banked” reset you redeem later. Third-party trackers count 55 of these one-off resets since September 2025, about one every 6.9 days. The dated log below covers August and September 2026.

When do Codex usage limits reset?

The 5-hour window resets 5 hours after it opens. The weekly window resets about 7 days after its first request, not on a fixed day. A new weekly period starts with your first Codex request after the previous one ended. If you stop using Codex for three days, your next week starts when you come back, so two people on the same plan reset on different days. GitHub issue #28246 documents this anchoring and the paid time it can cost you.

The two windows are checked separately. A fresh 5-hour window does not help if the weekly gauge is at 100%.

How do I check when my Codex limit resets?

What is a banked Codex reset?

A one-time reset that OpenAI puts on your account for you to use later, instead of resetting you on the spot. When you redeem it from the usage settings, both your 5-hour and weekly windows go back to 0% used, and your weekly reset date moves to a week from then. It does not raise your plan's allowance.

Banked resets expire about 30 days after they are granted, and nothing reminds you. Users have asked OpenAI to extend that in GitHub issue #28888. The practical rule: redeem a banked reset when your weekly gauge is high, not when it is nearly empty, and redeem it before the 30 days are up.

Why does OpenAI keep resetting Codex limits?

Mostly to celebrate launches and user milestones, and occasionally to compensate for bugs that over-counted usage. Most resets are announced on X by Thibault Sottiaux (@thsottiaux), who leads Codex engineering. Resets have marked 8M, 9M, 10M, 15M and 20M active users, new model releases, and on 29 August a set of fixes to bugs that had been charging users too much usage.

None of these resets is scheduled. You can't plan a workload around the next one, and you shouldn't price a plan on the assumption that it will come.

This log lists only the resets that both codex-resets.com and aiidelist record. Dates are in UTC. “Immediate” resets apply to all paid accounts at once. “Banked” resets are loaded into accounts to be redeemed within 30 days.

The trackers disagree about early September. aiidelist also lists banked resets on 3 and 5 September for accounts waiting on GPT-6 Astra, and resets on 31 August, 8 September and 12 September. codex-resets.com shows no reset between 29 August and 22 September. July was the busiest month, with a run of resets tied to the 7M to 10M user milestones.

Several community sites watch the announcements and log each reset. None is run by OpenAI.

Does Claude Code do surprise resets too?
